Take the tour to find out how the Visitor Search Trails widget works and
how you can add it to your website, search engine, or blog.
The widget displays the trails your users make when they visit your site. It shows the search engines they use, the terms they search with and what they find on your site.
It is free and easy to install.
Step 1: Go to the Visitor Search Trails page
http://trexy.com/publishers.html
There are two pieces of HTML that you need to add to your pages:
1. The HTML to record the trails on each page, and
2. The HTML to display the actual widget on your chosen pages.
As an example, let’s add the widget to blog.thegoo.org:
Step 2: Add Trail Sensors
You need to add a Trail Sensor to all the web pages where your users can leave trails. The Trail Sensor is a small snippet of HTML that you cut and paste into your pages.
The HTML you need to use is:
Cut and paste the HTML into all the pages just before the body tag.
Step 3: Add Visitor Search Trails Widget
Cut and paste the following HTML into your page(s) to display the widget to your visitors. The HTML is:
Insert the HTML into each page where you want the widget to appear.
Step 4: Publish the changes on your site.
Once you have published the changes you've made, the widget will appear where you have added it on your site. The widget will automatically update, displaying the trails that your visitors have created in real time.
The widget helps to build community. It shows you and your website users the:
search engines your visitors have used to access your site;
search terms they used;
flag of the country your visitors are searching from; and the
pages they accessed on your site for given searches.
Step 5: Test the widget is working
Go to Google, type in a search term that will lead to your site. For example, let’s search on: 'thegoo blog' and click on the link.
You can see the search trail coming in to the site appears in the widget. It shows that an Australian searched on Google for ‘thegoo blog.’
The Visitor Search Trails widget helps your users quickly pinpoint information.
The search terms are hyperlinked to the documents on your site that people visited. For example, we can follow in the footsteps of someone from the USA who searched on Yahoo! for ‘goo email e mail’ and visited this page:
Search trails created on your site are also displayed on Trexy.com, increasing your site's profile and online exposure. You can see this below:
These search trails, in turn, have the potential to be indexed by other search engines like Google and Yahoo, further enhancing your online presence.
Add Visitor Search Trails to your site.
